Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

The Journal of Aesthetic Surgery recognizes the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in research, writing, peer review, and editorial workflows. The journal supports responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI technologies while maintaining academic integrity and human accountability.

AI Use by Authors

Permitted Use

  • Language editing and grammar improvement.
  • Formatting assistance.
  • Improving clarity and readability.
  • Data organization or technical support under direct human supervision.

Disclosure Requirement

Authors must disclose any use of AI tools in the preparation of their manuscript. Disclosure must include the name of the tool and a description of how it was used. This statement should appear in the acknowledgments section or in a dedicated disclosure statement.

Prohibited Use

  • AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors.
  • AI may not be credited with intellectual contributions or accountability.
  • AI-generated interpretations, conclusions, or data that are not verified by the authors are strictly prohibited.
  • The fabrication of data, images, references, or peer review content using AI constitutes research misconduct.

AI Use by Reviewers

  • Reviewers must not upload or share confidential manuscript content with public AI systems.
  • AI tools may not replace independent scholarly judgment.
  • If AI tools are used for language assistance in drafting review reports, confidentiality must be strictly preserved.

AI Use by Editors

  • Editors may use AI tools for administrative or language support purposes only.
  • AI must not be used to make autonomous editorial decisions.
  • All editorial decisions remain the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board.

Accountability

Human authors, reviewers, and editors remain fully responsible and accountable for all submitted, reviewed, and published content. The use of AI tools does not diminish professional responsibility or ethical obligations.
